Since
1970, another transformation occurred as a result of the society's involvement
with education; more young people ventured out of Long Bedian to the cities
in hope of continuing their education or work. The migration rate in the
Long Bedian is not that high as the number of people in Long Bedian is
still large compared to other places in the region. Soon, Long Bedian
would be completely developed and possess a large population - from a
long house built of wood to modern concrete houses.
In the 1980s, another event affected the society, that is, the massive timber logging. Since then, more young people have participated or worked in the logging industries due to good salary offered. This employment had increased the family income in Long Bedian. Since 1981, Long Bedian has been inundated with visitors. Furthermore, many people stopped farming, chose to work around the logging campsites. By mid-1980s, only half the people had involved themselves with the other economic activities. Long Bedian made rapid development in 1999, when it joined the development program. Long Bedian became well known throughout the country when it emerged champion as the Kampung Wawasan in the development of remote area competition, which organized by national government. This success was a result of the cooperative spirit of the villagers, as well as the strategic management and committed leadership of the people of Long Bedian. These attributes have made Long Bedian a role model for the nation. Long Bedian is located in a Baram town in the Miri division. Most of the people here are Kayans or Orang Ulu. There are two ways to reach Long Bedian, either by an Express Boat or by Land Cruiser/Four-wheel drives. By sampan (small boat), the journey will take more than 10 hours whereas by 4 wheel drive vehicle on the timber road, the journey will take 3 hours. Thus, the timber road has become the main factor attributed to the economic development of Long Bedian. As Long Bedian has the potential to become a tourist attraction, a resort Tenyok Rimba Komuniti Resort has been built. The project is one of the numerous projects of RGC of the remote area development council. Due to the rapid development of Long Bedian, it is stands to become a focus area of social-economic activities in this region. This progress is set to continue given that the development council is actively maintaining and managing the rapid development of Long Bedian. |
