UNIMAS offers Pre-University Programmes to equip SPM leavers with a certain qualification prior to their enrolment into the university’s undergraduate programmes. Such programmes serve as feeder programs for the university’s future undergraduate intakes particularly in the Science and Technology as well as Business and Finance programmes. UNIMAS was the only recognised comprehensive public university (IPTA) in Sarawak to offer Pre-University programmes (Matriculation) such as these from 1995-1999. Moreover, these programmes would provide opportunity for the students especially those from rural areas and remote parts of Sarawak to study at the university, before joining the undergraduate programmes.
In line with the university’s aim to increase its students’ intake for the various undergraduate programmes offered, the Pre-University programmes were revived after a long hiatus. The Post Cabinet Meeting Bil 15/2008, dated 18 June 2008, chaired by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Minister of Higher Education has agreed for the UNIMAS Pre-University Programmes to be set up and commenced as part of the RMK10. This matter was also discussed in a meeting between the head of JPT Director and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (A&A) on 28 July 2008 in UNIMAS.
The formation of the Centre of Pre-University Studies in UNIMAS has since been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education with two Pre-University Programmes currently being offered: Foundation for Life Sciences and Foundation for Physical Sciences effective from the 2010/2011 academic session.
