Bachelor of Applied Arts with Honours (Drama and Theater)

The Drama and Theater Programme is among other programs that are offered at the Department of Performing Arts and Production Technology, Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts. The vision of this program is to strive towards a teaching, learning and research center for Drama and Theatre studies in Borneo that focuses on local performing arts. The local performing arts culture is introduced through teaching and learning of its various under graduate courses, research, publication and community engagement. The focus of this program is experimental theatre that embeds strong roots of local culture and technology. The Drama and Theatre program emphasizes theoretical and practical performing arts knowledge integrated with technology to produce sensitive, critical, creative and confident graduates in the performing arts, specifically in theatre, whom are able to offer idea and produce creative work. This holistic learning approach enables understanding, exploration, analysis of form and structure, management, creative process and production of drama and theatre. Among courses that are offered in this program are stage design, acting, directing, design for directors, scenography, theatre management, stage management, theatre production, Malaysian modern theatre, introduction to Mise en Scene, and dramatic theory and criticism. These courses are designed to empower students with strong professional values, and critical and analytical mind in the field of drama and theatre. The marketability of Drama and Theatre Program graduates are substantial and are not confined to Borneo, specifically Sarawak. The graduate of this program can join the professional work force as a scenographer, artistic director, actor, director, prop master, technical designer, audio designer, stage manager, event coodinator, lighting designer, production manager, event manager, cultural marketing officer, producer, academic officer at schools and higher learning institution, and cultural and arts officer.

A. University's Minimum Entry Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry into most undergraduate programmes are as follows:

Good pass in the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) with a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and a pass in Sejarah subject (for SPM 2013 and above) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

AND

A good pass in the Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) with a minimum of:

  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in Pengajian Am; AND
  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) other subjects,

OR

A good pass in Sijil Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi Sains UM/ Asasi UiTM with a minimum

  • CGPA of 2.00

OR

A recognised Diploma in relevant fields

AND

Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

  • At least Band 1

Good pass in the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) with a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and a pass in Sejarah subject (for SPM 2013 and above) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

Notes:

  1. Entry requirements into professional courses such as Medicine and Engineering are generally much higher. In addition there are also specific requirements for entry into certain programmes. Further details can be obtained from the relevant faculties.
  2. For foreign students, the general requirement is a good pass in A level, Matriculation, Higher School Certificates or other equivalent pre-university examinations. Malaysian Government Policy states that admission into certain degree programmes are restricted to local students only.

B. Special Requirements for Enrolment

Arts Stream

  • To get at least a C Grade (NGMP 2.00) in STPM Level in one (1) of the following subjects:
  • Seni Visual
  • Sejarah
  • Ekonomi
  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
  • AND
  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for below subjects:
  • Bahasa Inggeris
  • AND
  • Candidates who vision impairments discourage from applying

Arts Stream

  • Possessing a Diploma in the relevant field or any other qualifications endorsed by the UNIMAS Senate with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
  • AND
  • To provide Academic Transcript from First Semester till Final Semester.
  • OR
  • To get at least C Grade (2.00) in STPM Level in any one(1) of the subjects:
  • Seni Visual
  • Sejarah
  • Ekonomi
  • Information and Communications Technology
  • OR
  • To get at least C Grade (2.00) in Matriculation/Asasi Level in any two(2) of the subjects.
  • AND
  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for the subject below:
  • Bahasa Inggeris
  • *Candidates who possess vision impairments discourage from applying
  • *Candidates from Diploma in Teaching who recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education only can apply programme WA05 ( Music ) and programme WA32 ( Fine Art )

Accounting/Law/TESL Stream

  • To get at least a C Grade (NGMP 2.00) in Matriculation/Asasi Level in two(2) any of subjects:
  • AND
  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for below subject:
  • Bahasa Inggeris
  • *Candidates who possess vision impairments discourage from applying

Interested applicants should have successfully completed a minimum of 12 years of primary and secondary schools with a Higher School Certificate (HSC) qualification or its equivalents. In addition, students who have obtained a high school/college diploma or its equivalent may also apply

International students who wish to enroll in undergraduate programmes at UNIMAS are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements as listed below:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Scheme) score of 5.5 or
  • TOEFL (test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 or
  • CBT (computer-based TOEFL) score of 230 or
  • IBT (internet-based TOEFL) minimum score of 80 or
  • English Language requirement may be satisfied for applicants who have successfully completed full time secondary or tertiary studies or equivalent qualification where the language of instruction and assessment was in English. Academic transcript and an official letter from the institution certifying that English was the medium of instruction and assessment must be provided.

Students without the required level of English but meet the requirement for undergraduate studies will be given a conditional offer of undergraduate study and are required to enroll in the Intensive English Language Programme offered by the Faculty of Language Studies and Communication Studies, UNIMAS. Students who pass the Intensive English Language Programme can pursue their full-time undergraduate study at UNIMAS.
