WA14 - Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) Anthropology and Sociology

The Anthropology and Sociology program offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIMAS is designed to introduce students to a variety of theories, concepts and perspectives that inform the studies of anthropology and sociology. Its teaching and learning strategies are directed and relevant to the communities in Sarawak particularly, and Borneo as a whole. This approach helps to explore the themes of cultural diversity and social aspects that are unique to the societies in Borneo. Furthermore, students will be challenged to deploy critical reasoning and methodology when examining and debating contemporary issues such as globalisation, inequality, marginalisation, social transformation, sustainable development and environment.

Through engagement with these approaches, the program aims to produce graduates who are analytically competent and sensitive to current problems. Graduates in the discipline will have a firm grounding in the research specialization namely of Gender, Ethnicity and Belief System and Indigenous Knowledge. Overall, the program is set to become a forefront of anthropological and sociological studies and research on Borneo.

After graduating from this program, the students are able to:

  • Describe, define and differentiate the principles and concepts of Anthropology and Sociology.
  • Prepare, interpret and analyze Anthropological and Sociological data during fieldwork.
  • Communicate efficiently with stakeholders.
  • Apply knowledge and skills in problem solving and decision making in any fields engaged in.
  • Act professionally in the field they are engaged in and be responsible in helping with development in accordance to the social, community and global needs.
  • Apply knowledge gained and plan for continuous knowledge enhancement in facing global challenges.
  • Portray specific skills and plan for the future especially in matters related to entrepreneurship.
  • Show consistency in attitude and aspiration, with high ethical value.
  • Display awareness towards the diversity of culture and be responsible socially, in leadership practices and also in daily conversations and at national level.

A. University's Minimum Entry Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry into most undergraduate programmes are as follows:

Good pass in the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) with a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and a pass in Sejarah subject (for SPM 2013 and above) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

AND

A good pass in the Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) with a minimum of:

  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in Pengajian Am; AND
  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) other subjects,

OR

A good pass in Sijil Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi Sains UM/ Asasi UiTM with a minimum

  • CGPA of 2.00

OR

A recognised Diploma in relevant fields

AND

Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

  • At least Band 1

Good pass in the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) with a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and a pass in Sejarah subject (for SPM 2013 and above) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

Notes:

  1. Entry requirements into professional courses such as Medicine and Engineering are generally much higher. In addition there are also specific requirements for entry into certain programmes. Further details can be obtained from the relevant faculties.
  2. For foreign students, the general requirement is a good pass in A level, Matriculation, Higher School Certificates or other equivalent pre-university examinations. Malaysian Government Policy states that admission into certain degree programmes are restricted to local students only.

B. Special Requirements for Enrolment

Science Stream

  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for below subjects:
  • Mathematics/Additional Mathematics
  • Bahasa Inggeris

Arts Stream

  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for below subjects:
  • Mathematics/Additional Mathematics
  • Bahasa Inggeris

Science Stream

  • Possessing a Diploma in the relevant field or any other qualifications endorsed by the UNIMAS Senate with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
  • AND
  • To provide Academic Transcript from First Year till Final Semester.
  • OR
  • To get at least a credit with C Grade (NGMP 2.00) in STPM Level in any two(2) subjects (excluding Pengajian Am)
  • OR
  • To get at least C Grade (2.00) in Matriculation/Asasi Level in any two(2) subjects
  • AND
  • To get at least a pass with E Grade in SPM Level for below subjects:
  • Mathematics/Additional Mathematics
  • Bahasa Inggeris

Arts Stream

  • Possessing a Diploma in the relevant field or any other qualifications endorsed by the UNIMAS Senate with a minimum CGPA of 2.00

Interested applicants should have successfully completed a minimum of 12 years of primary and secondary schools with a Higher School Certificate (HSC) qualification or its equivalents. In addition, students who have obtained a high school/college diploma or its equivalent may also apply

International students who wish to enroll in undergraduate programmes at UNIMAS are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements as listed below:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Scheme) score of 5.5 or
  • TOEFL (test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 or
  • CBT (computer-based TOEFL) score of 230 or
  • IBT (internet-based TOEFL) minimum score of 80 or
  • English Language requirement may be satisfied for applicants who have successfully completed full time secondary or tertiary studies or equivalent qualification where the language of instruction and assessment was in English. Academic transcript and an official letter from the institution certifying that English was the medium of instruction and assessment must be provided.

Students without the required level of English but meet the requirement for undergraduate studies will be given a conditional offer of undergraduate study and are required to enroll in the Intensive English Language Programme offered by the Faculty of Language Studies and Communication Studies, UNIMAS. Students who pass the Intensive English Language Programme can pursue their full-time undergraduate study at UNIMAS.
