UNIMAS Innovation, which was first known as Research and Innovation Management Centre, was established in April 2003. As UNIMAS grew in size and stature, the need to strengthen research and grants within UNIMAS gave birth to the Research and Innovation Management Centre (RIMC) on 10 January 2005. The rapid growth of UNIMAS and the importance of research and innovation for our university led to the change in RIMC’s name to UNIMAS Innovation on 1st January 2015.

The Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy was established in 2009 to strengthen and rationalize the UNIMAS research, demonstration and development efforts in all renewable energy technologies. CoERE is dedicated to accelerate the deployment and grid integration of renewable energy and low carbon generation technology through the utilization of Wind, Tidal Wave, Biomass, Hydro Power, Solar PV and Solar Thermal energy. As we step into this new era, there are high technological demand for ecology, energy saving, resources, and preservation of environment. Development of technologies for alternative energy for the reduction of energy consumption is an emergent issue. CoERE is grouped into several teams which have been directing all our efforts toward helping to develop clean energy systems. We are inviting any organization to collaborate with us. We hope CoERE becomes a catalyst for our future direction on green energy development.

The Malaria Research Centre (MRC) was established as one of the two Centres of Excellence by UNIMAS in January 2006. This was in recognition of the major contributions to malaria research by Prof Balbir Singh, Prof Janet Cox-Singh and co-researchers at the Malaria Research Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Their research team made a landmark discovery in 2004 that Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian malaria parasite, was causing human malaria. With funds from local and overseas funding agencies including the Wellcome Trust, they subsequently made several other key discoveries which have highlighted knowlesi malaria as a life-threatening zoonotic disease that is prevalent throughout Southeast Asia. Research at the MRC focusses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, evolution and population genetics of P. knowlesi and other malaria parasites.

The Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) was founded in 1995 with the goal of studying diseases important in the region. The Institute’s founding member and its first director, Prof. Dr. Jane Cardosa, was instrumental in building up a world class laboratory with modern facilities with highly trained staff, to facilitate top notch research capacity in the land of Hornbills. Today, the institute is home to a team of talented researchers dedicated to investigating the causes and diagnosis of viral diseases of public health importance in the region. Most importantly, we have created and continue to strengthen links within our community and have contributed significantly to health issues relevant to the people of Sarawak.

nstitute of Borneo Studies, formerly known as Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) was established on the 1st of March 1997 at the centre of University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in Kota Samarahan. The role of the institute is to promote research in all relevant areas to ensure deeper and holistic understanding of the socio-political dynamics of the East Asian region in the global context by taking into account the social, cultural, religious, historical, and civilizational aspects. The focus of research at IBS is the island of Borneo and Malaysia in the context of South-east Asia and East Asia a region undergoing drastic transformation as a consequence of unprecedented economic development and globalization.

The Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation was set up in July 1994 as one of the founding institutions within UNIMAS with the purpose of promoting research in two niche areas-tropical biodiversity and environmental conservation.Its teaching and research programmes are structured at the masters,doctoral and postdoctoral levels.
