General University Requirements

A Malaysian candidate who wishes to pursue a programme of study at the University Malaysia Sarawak must fulfill the University's entry requirements as follows:

Pass the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/equivalent with a credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or
A credit in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July papers and pass in History (SPM 2013 and above); and
Achieve a minimum Band 2 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Kelayakan Minimum Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi Sains UM/Asasi UiTM/Asasi UNIMAS

Dan Mendapat sekurang-kurangnya Tahap 2 (Band 2) dalam Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

Student Welfare

The Student Welfare Unit assists students in obtaining financial support, either in the form of loans or scholarships, to reduce the financial burden during their studies at UNIMAS. The unit acts as a mediator between students and sponsoring bodies, providing advice, information, and announcements regarding various sponsorships offered to UNIMAS students. However, students can also apply for sponsorships advertised in local newspapers (for sponsorships not offered through UNIMAS).

Currently, approximately fifty (50) organizations offer loans and scholarships to UNIMAS students. Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) and the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (JPA) are among the two largest sponsors that provide scholarships/financial loans throughout the duration of the students' studies at UNIMAS (subject to the study period offered by UNIMAS). Additionally, students are encouraged to refer to scholarship and study loan offers in national newspapers or browse the websites of sponsoring organizations, as sponsors also use mass media/social media platforms to announce scholarships/study loans.

Functions

Coordinating and implementing the management and consultation services related to financial assistance for UNIMAS students who require aid.
Providing social services to assist students/cases in need, particularly in terms of medical bills/surgeries that exceed the students' medical coverage, referral to the Medical Social Work Unit in Government Hospitals and Public Universities, student death cases, and insurance management.
Coordinating all matters related to sponsorship, loans, and scholarships throughout the students' study period at UNIMAS.
Obtaining information from sponsoring bodies regarding loans or scholarships periodically for dissemination to students.
Managing joint affairs with all sponsors regarding activities and programs such as Sponsor-Student Meetings, Interview Arrangements, Advisory Services, Briefings, Consultations, Notification Notices, and documentation-related matters, ensuring completeness before submission to sponsors.
Assisting the university in managing the welfare of students with disabilities [OKU] who are pursuing their studies at UNIMAS.
Managing and monitoring student welfare funds, Zakat (Islamic alms), and student insurance funds at UNIMAS.

Financial Assistance for Students

Management of Student Sponsorships and Scholarships

Play a vital role in coordinating and facilitating the process of securing sponsorships and scholarships for eligible students. The services provided in this area include:

Sponsorship Opportunities: The unit actively seeks and identifies sponsorship opportunities for students. They establish connections with external organizations, corporations, and individuals who are willing to provide financial support to students through sponsorships.
Application Assistance: The unit assists students in preparing and submitting sponsorship applications. They provide guidance on the application requirements, documents needed, and any specific criteria set by the sponsors. They ensure that students have a clear understanding of the application process and deadlines.
Selection Process: The unit collaborates with sponsors to manage the selection process. They help in reviewing and shortlisting applications based on the sponsor's criteria. They may also coordinate interviews or assessments if required by the sponsors.
Communication and Coordination: The unit serves as the primary point of contact between students and sponsors. They facilitate effective communication, ensuring that students receive updates on the status of their applications and any additional requirements from the sponsors. They also coordinate any necessary arrangements, such as signing of agreements or attending sponsor-related events.
Scholarship Disbursement: Once students are awarded scholarships, the unit ensures the smooth disbursement of funds. They work closely with the university's finance department or relevant sponsors to coordinate the financial aspects, including the timely release of scholarship funds to the students.
Monitoring and Compliance: The unit monitors students' adherence to the terms and conditions of the sponsorships or scholarships. They provide guidance and support to students in meeting any obligations or requirements set by the sponsors.

Management of Student Welfare for Students with Disabilities (OKU)

Providing support and assistance to students with disabilities (OKU) to ensure their well-being and inclusivity within the university environment. The services offered in managing the welfare of OKU students include:

Accessibility Support: The unit works closely with relevant departments and facilities to ensure that the campus environment is accessible to OKU students. This includes providing wheelchair ramps, accessible pathways, elevators, and accessible restrooms. They also collaborate with IT departments to ensure that digital platforms and resources are accessible to OKU students.
Personal Assistance: The unit assists OKU students in acquiring personal assistance services, such as sign language interpreters, note-takers, or personal caregivers, based on their specific needs. They coordinate and facilitate the provision of these services to ensure that OKU students can fully participate in academic activities and campus life.
Academic Accommodations: The unit collaborates with academic departments and faculty members to implement necessary accommodations for OKU students. This may include providing extra time for examinations, arranging for alternative assessment methods, or ensuring accessible learning materials. They work closely with OKU students and academic staff to ensure that the accommodations meet their individual needs.
Counselling and Emotional Support: The unit provides counseling services tailored to the specific challenges and needs of OKU students. They offer guidance and support to help OKU students navigate academic, personal, and social issues. They also collaborate with external support organizations or disability support networks to provide additional resources and assistance.
Advocacy and Awareness: The unit advocates for the rights and inclusion of OKU students within the university community. They raise awareness among students, faculty, and staff about the challenges and needs of OKU students, promoting a more inclusive and supportive environment. They also collaborate with student organizations or clubs to organize events or campaigns that promote disability awareness and inclusivity.
Financial Aid and Scholarships: The unit assists OKU students in accessing financial aid and scholarships specifically designed for students with disabilities. They provide guidance on eligibility criteria, application procedures, and deadlines. They also collaborate with external organizations or foundations that offer scholarships or financial assistance to OKU students.

Procedure for Applying Financial Assistance

01. Application Form

Obtain the application form for financial assistance. This form may be available online, at the organization's office, or through designated distribution channels.

02. Review and Support Documentation

Review the application form thoroughly to ensure that all required information is provided accurately. Additionally, gather any supporting documents that may be necessary to accompany your application, such as proof of income, bank statements, identification documents, or any other documentation specified by the organization.

03. Application Opening

Check the opening dates for submitting applications. Financial assistance programs usually have specific periods when they accept applications. Ensure that you submit your application within the specified timeframe.

04. Attend an Interview

Some financial assistance programs may require an interview as part of the application process. If so, prepare for the interview by researching common interview questions and practicing your responses. Dress professionally and arrive on time for the interview.

05. Notification of Approval

If your application is approved, you will receive a notification informing you of the approval decision. This notification may provide details about the amount of assistance you will receive, any terms and conditions, and instructions on how to proceed further.

06. Approval Decision

After the organization reviews your application and supporting documentation, they will make a decision regarding your eligibility for financial assistance. This decision may take some time, so be patient and wait for the notification or communication from the organization.
